Character/Personal References

A personal reference letter can be written by a mentor or family friend who can attest to the skills and qualities that would make the person a good candidate for the position he/she is applying for.

How to ask for a recommendation letter?

When the time comes and you need to ask someone to write a reference letter for you, you may consider different aspects, like, who are you going to ask? You should consider former teachers, managers and colleagues who you’ve had a good relationship with while working together.

You should ask for the reference letter first and then, if they say yes, send an email with the details and information about you. You can also include templates of the type of letter you’re looking for. Make the request with time, at least two weeks before the letter is due.

The importance of the Reference Letters. To help you write an effective recommendation letter here are some guidelines you should consider while you’re writing:


Always begin your letters with “Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name.” If you do not know the responsable name, you can write “Dear Admissions Committee.” If you are writing a more general letter, you could write to “Whom It May Concern”.

First Paragraph

In the first paragraph you should explain how you know the candidate, how long you worked with and why you are qualified to write a reference letter for the candidate. 

Next Paragraphs

The middle paragraphs of the recommendation letter should explain why you think the candidate has the skills and abilities for the job that is applying for. You should also tell specific detailed examples that prove that the person has the qualifications required to the school or opportunity that he or she is applying for.


A letter of recommendation should have more than two paragraphs but shouldn’t be more than a single page.


Use a standard font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri. The font size should be between 10 and 12 points, so it’s easy to read.
