The luck of knowing from an early age what we want to do for life is not something a lot of people can grab off. Trust us, if you do, you are a lucky one! Most of us look for a long time for our dream job and it can stressful when it comes to choosing the right course. Do not worry, it is perfectly normal since we want to be sure we are making the right decision for our lives. So, how to choose your course?

So, how to choose your course? There are a few questions you can ask yourself that will start pointing you the right way, such as:

  • First, what am I good at?
  • What do others think am I good at?
  • People ask me for help for what?
  • What can I easily do that others find complicated?
  • About my hobbies: what are they now and what were my hobbies when I was a child?
  • Where do I see myself working?
  • What do I see myself doing in 10 years?

In high school, what are/were my favourite subjects? And what are the ones I am not good at?

How to choose your course?

Although this might sound a bit cliché and answering these questions may not give you the exact answer of what job you should be doing in the future, you’ll for sure get you to find a pattern and close to an area of interest. Once you identify that area, the next step will be to do a lot of searches.

So, what jobs people from in this area are doing, what courses exist and what are the career opportunities?

After that, you will be able to understand if you identify with any of these career options and if it is a good fit for you.

When you have an area of interest already in mind a good thing to do is to think bigger, this meaning seeing the options of study progression. For example, if you like Criminology but you are not sure if this is a good choice for your bachelor, start big and choose the mother-subject, in this case, Psychology. In addition, during the bachelor, you will understand which area of Psychology is a better fit for you and then for your Master you can go deeper into that area and get the best of the two worlds. Above all, often students start with an idea and during their bachelor, they fall in love with a subject that makes them change their mind about their specialization. Do not be afraid to think big!
